Film Resources
Your guide to film and video resources (cinema sites, bibliographies, etc.) and film theory. For Hollywood (studios, movies and screenwriting) and the "biz," see Other Worlds.
The Guide to Film and Video Resources on the Internet (not just the Web) is the first and still the finest listing of film and video resources for cinema cognoscenties. Its a massive guide that's a great jumping off point for research and information. The guide includes listings of Internet resources for reviews, academic/scholarly discussions, general/popular discussions, production/technical discussions, filmographies/bibliographies, searchable databases and other resources.
The Internet Movie Guide: Probably the most comprehensive guide to films on the Net, with reviews, cast lists, filmographies, and information on thousands upon thousands of films. And the lists are searchable by name and title.
The Cinema Site is a comprehensive guide to important cinema and video sites on the Web. Here you'll find databases, newsletters and journals, festivals, film appreciation and historical interest sites, production information and even "stuff or sale."
The Film.com general index lists sites on a wide range of film topics, including Actors, Animation, Archives and Museums, Characters, Contests and Products, Databases, Directors, Essays and Magazines, Festivals, Genres, History, Institutes and Film Schools, Mailing Lists, Music, Production Resources, Quotations, Reviews, Schedules and Theaters, Societies and the Technical aspects of filmmaking.
T|E|L|E|C|I|N|E: The Journal of New Media Authoring in the Digital Domain "is dedicated to publishing unique and creative forms of media authoring which can only exist in the Digital Domain. We are interested in promoting the authoring of hypertext documents which cannont be faithfully distributed in a form other than digital." The Web site is sponsored by the Department of Radio, TV and Film at Northwestern University. They also offer a resource and information page as well as a comprehensive page of crticial articles on film, radio and TV and links to other media resources.
Mr. Cranky Rates the Movies: Tired of the run-of-the-mill film reviewers? Fed up with film culture? Want a little post-post-postmodern criticism? Then check out Mr. Cranky. The crotchety moviegoer rates films on a scale of one bomb ("Almost Tolerable") to four bombs ("As good as a poke in the eye with a sharp stick") to "dynomite" ("So godawful that it ruptured the very fabric of space and time with the sheer overpowering force of its mediocrity"). Mr. Cranky provides in-depth analysis as to why a movie, "to quote the film school term, 'sucks.'" There's feedback forums from other Web surfers, or you can offer your own thoughts. There's even links to other film-related sites. If you can't enjoy the movies, you can enjoy Mr. Cranky (But don't tell him we said so).
